Services
Clepsydra is characterized by its excellency in infrastructure and know-how on cultural heritage digitisation and archiving projects. It can provide services in the fields of digital archiving and management as well as in preservation, promotion and dissemination.

More specifically, the centre can support the following types of projects:

Three dimensional digitisation of movable objects

    • Three dimensional digitisation of high accuracy with the laser triangulation method
    • Three dimensional reconstruction of movable objects with the use of 'Shape from silhouette' technique
    • Three dimensional reconstruction of objects based on the 'Shape from structured light' technique

    Three dimensional digitisation of monuments

    • Three dimensional scanning of high accuracy with the use LIDAR technology (time-of-flight)
    • Terrestrial Photogrammetry
    • Empirical and topographical reconstruction
    • Three dimensional reconstructions of monuments based on hybrid methods
Three dimensional digitisation of cultural heritage areas

    • Three dimensional scanning of high accuracy with the use LIDAR technology (time-of-flight)
    • Terrestrial Photogrammetry
    • Three dimensional reconstructions of monuments based on hybrid methods

Digitisation of manuscripts, books, films and audiovisual material

    • Colour two dimensional digitisation of books, manuscripts, magazines, newspapers with sizes larger than A1
    • High resolution digital photoshooting (40Mpixels)
    • Multispectral archiving and X-rays
    • Colour scanning of films, microfilms and transparencies
    • High resolution colour scanning of photographic material
    • Digitisation of analog audio mediums, conversion to modern high fidelity mediums, editing and restoration
    • Digitisation of analog video mediums, conversion to modern high fidelity mediums, editing and restoration.

Assiduity of cultural heritage digital archives, documentation, management of digital information

    • Archiving and management of digital heritage. Metadata organised based on the MPEG-7 standard, CIDOC in XML form. Multimedia Web based Databases RDBMS/XML-Native, digital libraries.

    Promotion and Dissemination

    • Virtual reality, interactive 3D representations and reconstructions, photorealistic renderings, Web based applications and portals, thematic websites, multimedia, production of audiovisual material (DVD)

    Virtual Reality

    • Interactive three dimensional reconstructions of monuments and cultural heritage areas in CD/DVD-ROM or web based.
    • Virtual Museums in CD/DVD- ROM or web based.

The infrastructure allows the digitisation of various types and sizes of objects. Those can be found in the following categories :

    • Monuments, Temples, etc
    • Artifacts
    • Statues, busts, etc
    • Tools, machinery, etc
    • Music instruments
    • Jewels
    • Manuscripts, printed documents, books, etc
    • Costumes
    • Manuscripts, printed documents, books, etc
    • Photographs, negatives, films, etc
    • Paintings and works of art
    • Audiovisual material

The two dimensional digitisation can be applied for all the previously mentioned types of objects. The infrastructure allows the colour digitisation with (36 bitdepth colour at high resolutions (> 4000 dpi for scanning and > 40 Mpixel for photoshooting). On the other hand, in three dimensional digitisation the size of the movable objects that be scanned with an accuracy of 0,025 mm can vary from some millimeters up to 2.5 meters μέτρα (διάμετρος). (diameter). Larger objects can also be digitized with less accuracy.

The resolution and accuracy of the digital objects is defined by their target application and usage. There are two basic categories that are defined according to the usage of the digital material:

Α. Digital archiving for documentation projects or scientific research. It is characterized by the high resolution and accuracy of the data which can be used for further research and scientific information extraction.

Β. Production of educational or commercial digital material with lower resolution and accuracy but still with a high realistic visual result. Applicable for web based promotion.

The quality of services is ensured by following national and international specifications, guidelines (Handbook for quality in public cultural applications: criteria, guidelines and basic recommendations and Good Practice Handbook of Minerva Network of Excellence') and benchmarking.
